Hair Feels Dry After Big Chop – What Can I Do About Dry Hair?

naturalhair5Many women complain that after doing their big chop, their hair feels dry and crunchy. Most begin to co-wash their hair 3-4x per week in an effort to stave off the dryness. Others, when faced with wild unruly hair, opt forĀ  a protein treatment and frequent deep conditioners.

Both are in my opinion the wrong approach to take.

Afro textured hair is delicate and handling it frequently when wet only increases the opportunities for damage and breakage. When your hair feels dry it doesn’t need protein, it needs MOISTURIZING TREATMENTS and a daily spritz.

Instead of doing a commercial conditioner co-wash, opt for 100% natural ingredients that won’t leave a hardening build-up on your hair.

Yes, I do protein treatments on my hair every six weeks or so. However, I do not use commercial products, and I never do a protein mask unless I immediately follow it up with a moisturizing treatment WITHOUT ADDITIONAL PROTEIN. Most commercial deep conditioners add protein, and lots of it.

One of the best enriching and moisturizing treatments you can do for your dry natural hair is an avocado/honey treatment. Depending upon the length of your hair you may need to double this recipe. You want your hair and scalp to be saturated with the avocado mix. You should not have to worry about “stretching” it or having enough to coat your entire head of hair, especially the ends where breakage is most likely to occur

1. Take one medium sized very ripe avocado and mash with fork until no chunks remain. A hand blender is a great tool to use here as well.
2. Add in 2 Tablespoons of honey and 1 Tablespoon avocado or olive oil; mix well.
3. Apply to dampened hair, massaging it into the scalp too which will help with itching.
4. Cover head with a plastic cap, and leave mixture on for 30 minutes or more.
5. Rinse well with lukewarm water, and follow with shampoo and conditioner if desired.

I don’t use shampoo after this treatment; I just rinse well with water, then do an ACV rinse made with 2 tablespoons raw apple cider vinegar in 4 cups of distilled water, massaging into scalp to rinse scalp well too as I pour. Then I quickly rinse out any traces of vinegar with cool water, wrap my head in an old tshirt to dry, then add my leave-in, my butter and twist or braid my hair.

    I love DIY beauty recipes. This is a great one. The honey works great as a moisturizing additive, but the avocado should be noted as a protein additive, making it both a moisturizing and a protein conditioning treatment.

      Not really. Though avocados contain a negligble amount of protein (4 gms in a whole avocado), the molecules of the protein in food products such as an avocado are far too large to pass into the hair. In order to be of any real benefit as a protein conditioner, the protein must be hydrolyzed.

      This is because to be useful as a protein/strengthening conditioner, the protein has to adsorb (yep with a D) to hair. Adsorb means the protein sticks to and forms temporary bonds with the hair.

      Very large protein molecules simply can’t form these bonds reliably. Amino acids on the other hand tend to be very soluble in water so you can expect that you will remove majority of whatever you put on once you rinse your hair.

      With damaged hair, very small hydrolysed protein (known as peptide fragments) can also be absorbed – yes this can penetrate through to the cortex and be deposited in the hair shaft (Journal of Cosmetic Science, pg69-87, 1993).

      Just because a protein is broken down by our digestive system, absorbed through the intestinal wall and made useful by the living human body does not mean that same protein slapped on our hair will provide the same nutritional benefits.

      What avocados are is full of fat, vitamin E to be exact, which DOES absorb into the cortex and coat the hair shaft protecting it from water damage. For women with dry hair, avocados and avocado oil are fabulous conditioning treatments.
